Dear Jesus - Thank You for friends. Thank You for kicking off my Sabbath with just an awesome lunch companion. Please keep my mind in Your care always...
About four weeks ago, a friend asked if I would like to do lunch some day? Would I? Does it rain in the NorthWest?? Flash forward through many interruptions and reschedulings - and voila! Today was the day!

What Does God Wear?
Dear Jesus - I praise You for revealing Yourself to us in Your Word. Give us hearts to open to the revelation...
Do you ever wonder what God wears? Do you ever wonder what Adam and Eve wore? A child does. A thought as simple as this may seem to be - is provided for in the Bible. Let's consider:

What To Do When You Make Up Bible Verses?
REPENT!!!
Or - at least that is what I am learning to do... :-)
The other day I was giving a Bible verse, only I realized I had confused 2 passages together! And what I actually said wasn't even IN the Bible!!

Psalms 23 - Instruction for This Day...
Dear Jesus - We praise You that You ARE the Word sent down from heaven to fill us each and every day! We confess our appetites are not healthy because we feed so much of the time on junk food. Please help us - create in us a clean heart and renew our appetites today. Thank You Jesus!
Let's see what specific instruction we get today from Psalms 23:

Excellence a Habit?
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Aristotle
What do you think? Certainly what we repeatedly do forms 'habit'. But the leap from there to 'Excellence'? Not according to the Bible...

Ears - Are They Safe?
Be a good listener. Your ears will never get you in trouble. -Frank Tyger
I have no idea who Frank Tyger is - and I certainly wish him all the best. However - if I were his friend, I'd have to say: 'Pssst - Frank... Can I let you in on something? Our ears CAN get us into trouble! They are a 'window' to our souls. That's what the Bible says - and I believe it.'

Job's Confidence
Dear Jesus - I praise You that we can bring You all of our questions and You will answer them!
A few weeks back, I concluded reading the book of Job and jumped straight into Psalms. Both of these books have many things in common - but the theme that struck me was this: Job & David vehemently and with confidence declare themselves righteous. Sometimes - in the same breath used to utter not-so-nice phrases against those who disagree with their statements. This puzzled me. The picture in Psalm 51 resonates more loudly with my life struggle wherein 'my sins are always before me'. I wanted to know: how could they tout their own righteousness so confidently?

Am I in Hot Water - Again?
Dear Jesus - My will is stubborn. That makes my path crooked. Please create a clean heart within me and renew a right spirit within me - that I may lean not on my understanding, but in all my ways acknowledge You that You might direct my paths...
This is an interesting verse often read. But recently - some elements came together for me in a special way. It happens, that geographically, Jerusalem is set upon a hill and so this walk would have been a downhill walk. Further, when we look at the names of the cities - we see Jerusalem (the City of God) and Emmaus (Hot Water, warm spring).
In actuality, the two of them were leaving the City of God, going downhill, headed for Hot Water. Which may help explain the further verses which describe them as blinded towards the presence of Jesus.
As I reflect upon myself, I find I too am frequently IN hot water, with the City of God somewhere far away because I have left it. The City of God didn't go anywhere - in leaving it, I headed downhill and landed in hot water...
Thank You Jesus, that even when I'm headed directly for trouble You are with me, wooing me with Your gentle spirit... Thank You that You are ever faithful...
Luke 24:13 (NKJV)
13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.

The Strangeness of Matthew 24...
Dear Jesus - We confess that sometimes we miss the beauty of Your word because we are sin-filled creatures. But we are YOUR creatures. So please heal our eyes, ears and hearts to hear Your word as You would have us to do.
Matthew 24 is an odd read. Really. Read it. The flow is stilted and the reader is left off-kilter. Why do you suppose that is?

Practical Lessons from Nehemiah 4
As you may recall - I highly recommend the daily Bible reading plan RevivedbyHisWord.org. This has been such a huge blessing to my life! We are presently in the book of Nehemiah and what a blessing.

Alpha and Ab...
Dear Jesus - Touch our hearts with the beauty of Yourself in this study....
This post began in the end. Revelation - that is. Did you know the phrase 'Alpha and Omega' occurs 4 times in the Bible and all those occurrences are in the book of Revelation? This was news to me - and got me to thinking along the lines of a very simple principle for Bible study: Greek words generally have corresponding Hebrew words.

Jesus' Request for Forgiveness...
Dear Jesus - We cannot even glimpse Your amazing love and forgiveness unless You give us the gift of Your Spirit. Please give us that gift now that You may change our lives...
The other night I was puttering around idly listening as my husband read to my son from The Bible Story book for the night. The evening's story was about the crucifixion. The books are old. Very old. And very Biblically accurate. However, something the author noted caught my ear. I had to check it out for myself.

How Jesus Saved Me From My Television
This is just another reason why I love Jesus. Because He delivered me from my television! It started innocently enough...
In 2006 or so, my husband and I decided to reduce our cable expenses and only pay for the near-minimum service. We figured all we watched was public broadcasting and the Discovery Channel anyway - so easy enough to do. No problem.
As 2010 entered, this oh-so-slight-niggle crept into our hearts that despite our admission that we only ever watched PBS & the Discovery Channel, we really were watching too much television. Yeah - we probably agreed with the 'niggle'...
Spring of 2011 came around - and with it? Spring Cleaning! Woohoo! Craigslist here we come! And we did. The desk purchased with such high ambitions a few years previously, had proved to be rather a space hog. Except - on it sat the TV and the cable box. (And no, we didn't sell the TV, patience here!) So - listed it on Craigslist.

Stones - Parallels to Today
Dear Jesus - Please send us Your Holy Spirit so we can awaken from our sinfilled slumber and see our true condition...
We've been considering the 15th chapter of 2nd Chronicles. An amazing chapter to be sure. In this post - our focus will be 'parallels' and the 'me' or the 'church' dimensions. This means, we will be looking for parallels between the story, its setting and our day. These parallels the Holy Spirit will show us and help us to discern their relation to our personal lives.
Before listing some of the verses that stand out, let's consider the context:
King Asa had faced the first 'million man march' on record and the Lord delivered Judah in amazing fashion (2 Chron. 14:9-12). Chapter 15 gives additional context about the condition of 'the church' during these times:

Stones - God's Vocabulary
Dear Jesus - Our minds are sin filled and degenerate from generations of sin. Please cover us with Your Holy Spirit. Open our eyes, that we may behold wonderful things from Your Word.
A daily Bible reading program provides the reader with a free field, rich with treasure and ours for the digging! There are lots of programs available. I recommend Revived by His Word because it is only 1 chapter daily and there is an accompanying blog commentator who, read regularly, will expose us to many study principles for unpacking the chapter.
Last week, I read 2 Chronicles 15 and for the first time, my heart burned within me regarding a link to the New Testament. The Bible is the language of God - His vocabulary if you will. The more we take it in, the more patterns and pictures will pop out to us. Much like learning any language.

Stones...
Dear Jesus - We understand that You use many symbols in the Bible. Please send us Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth so we can understand You more...
To the right there are links to a solid source for Biblical symbols. However, what do you notice as you review the list? It is the Bible itself that is to explain itself. As we have noted before, we must always approach the Bible with prayer for it is a Book like no other. It is the Word of God. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned and God in His great mercy promises us the Holy Spirit to guide us in our study.
The next most important safeguard to keep in mind is that the Bible is the revelation of Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:1). We must measure all we discover against the picture of God's character that it reveals. We do this by comparing verse with verse.
The topic of Bible symbols is a beautiful one - and therefore the enemy attacks it particularly vigorously. But we are determined not only to pick up the gems lying on the surface, but to dig for buried treasure as well! Our safeguard? The Bible defines the symbols it uses. How awesome is that?
Let's give this a go...

Context, Context, Context - and John 14:1-6
Dear Jesus - Thank You for Your amazing WORD...
Perhaps I have mentioned this before? Since June of last year, I have an amazing prayer partner. We meet on the phone on M / W / F of each week. First, we discuss our Bible reading for the day. We are both on the same reading plan. Then we move into prayer. Total time? About 30 minutes. Experience? Priceless.
Anyway - we got to discussing John 14:1-3 yesterday. Once again the value of context popped up. Below is the expanded text in the NASB which provides a more literal translation. Consider the question: Where is Jesus going?

Brain Teaser - Matthew 6:33 NLT
Today, I saw this posted by a religious organization:
Matthew 6:33
New Living Translation (NLT)
33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
Footnotes:
- 6:33 Some manuscripts do not include of God.
I was taken aback. Let's ask ourselves a couple of questions:
A Familiar Verse - Or Is It? John 14:1-3
Parent to Child: What do you think Jesus is doing right now?
Child: Making homes for me in Heaven!
Parent: Aaahhhhh yes...
But wait - that's not true!

Remember. No, really!
Here's a profound, though simple study. A word search in the old king on the word 'remember'. Guess? Got one?
144 times. 144 times. Like - 144,000 - but just 144. Like 12 x 12. God's ultimate in creation.
Seems important. Maybe I should. Wonder what He wants me to remember? What does He want me not to remember? What does He remember & not remember?
Oh dear Jesus - we cannot remember without Your help. Please reveal to us what You would have each of us remember... Thank You for promising to be our Strength and our 'rememberer'...

Siloam vs Bethesda
The idea of a pool today evokes thoughts of peace, healing, comfort, luxury. However, in Jesus' time, pools were about physical healing or cleansing - either physically or spiritually. A week or so ago, posted this link to the stories in John 8 & 9. Today though, I want to go a little deeper into this question:
Why the Pool of Siloam and not the Pool of Bethesda?

Anchor Points - Though He Slay Me...
In my 20s, life took a turn and within five years, my parents, 3 grandparents and an aunt died. Of course - most traumatic was the death of my parents. My younger sister and I struggled through the lingering illnesses and the details that wrap up the life of a loved one.
As I traversed the peaks and valleys that characterized my loss, Jesus interposed a verse and I clung to it. The first part of Job 13:15:

The Circle of the Earth
Dear Jesus - We confess it is difficult to discern the literal truths You long to teach us from Your Word sometimes. Please help us to live more and more in the way of Your Spirit...
In the 9th grade, I was blessed to have an English teacher who believed in incorporating the subject of astronomy and the Bible into English class. Her name was Alice Straw - and I still have the notebook we were required to make in that class.

Fruit or Fruits?
Dear Jesus - I praise You for the quality of life You long to give each of us. Help us to really understand that truth in the deepest parts of our soul...
Galatians 5:22-23
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Have you ever noticed that verse 22 says 'fruit' not 'fruits'?

How Old ?
The question periodically rattles around in my head as I read the Bible. Because, I wonder what I would have done had I been there. Was the character older or younger than me?
Bible Filter - ACTIVATE!
A friend posted this on Facebook. I was taken aback - could the Bible really say that?
In the same way I will not cause pain
without allowing something new to be born,” says the Lord.
“If I cause you the pain,
I will not stop you from giving birth to your new nation,” says your God.

Problems at Church?
For some reason, it seems there are occasions when we church-goers are confronted with problems at church that interfere with our capacity to receive God's blessing during our all-to-brief time in the sanctuary.

1 Verse Unlocks a Chapter
Huntingtower Castle, Perth |
Ever just plain "had it" with the Pharisees? Sometimes reading the Gospels can seem a bit hopeless as one gets a glimmer of the spiritual state of things. Wooops - better check myself before I condemn myself! Been attending a weekly study that is going through all 4 Gospels at one time in time sequence. The latest study just blew me away as I sat there. 'Cause I saw myself - and well, the only good thing about that was the end of the story!

Forest or the Tree...
Dear Jesus - Please send Your Spirit to soften our hearts and open our eyes to the truths You have for us....
When I first started studying the Bible - as opposed to reading it - I was all excited to do a big old study. Committed. Going to put all this into practice with my daily Bible reading plan I was doing a the time. The very next morning upon my return home, I excitedly opened my daily reading plan to see what would be there. Genesis 38 was there. I can think of probably less than 5 other chapters in the Bible I find more disgusting.
Bible Filter - ACTIVATE!
How's your practice activating that Bible-filter going?
Here's a doozy for you.... Saw this the other day.

Can Despising Be Good?
I'm on a 90-day devotional journey using the book Prayer90X - 90 Days to a Spiritually Fit You.
Day 1 - mostly just freaked out. Had to just repeat the Memory Text the E.N.T.I.R.E. day. You can probably guess what that was: Thou wilt keep her in perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon Thee because she trusteth in Thee. Thought I trusted God - and I do. Just apparently not with my actual life.

Aaron's Rod - What's That About?
This is sort of a continuation of the previous post talking about Eden and the rivers surrounding it.
Dear Jesus - Please open our minds to see ourselves in Your Word today...
Have you ever wondered about the story of Aaron’s rod? It wasn't until I saw the rod in the context of the bigger picture that I understood the beauty of the story. Before this - I just saw it as a test of leadership. And while that was meaningful - to my mind it was more instructional that beautiful. But - when I saw the rod transformed by the process of dwelling in the sanctuary - well that was beautiful!

For All Who Work to Exhaustion...
Dear Jesus - Thank You for the practicality of Your Word. And thank You for the very personal message You've sent to me today...
Matthew 11 (NASB) - using the footnotes:
28 “Come to Me, all who who work to exhaustion, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is comfortable, or pleasant and My burden is light.”

The Ark Finds a Home in Jerusalem
Linen Cloth from Qumran Probably Used to Cover Scrolls |
Dear Jesus - You are truly worthy of all praise. I praise You today that You invite all of us to get into the ark while there is time. Help me see with Your eyes today and I claim the promise You have given that Your WORD will not return to You void.

Dew Droplets
Morning Dew On a Blade of Grass |
Dear Jesus - We ask this morning that You cause us to sing the Song of Moses. Both here on this earth and one day with all the Heavenly hosts.
“Give ear, O heavens, and let me speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
“Let my teaching drop as the rain,
My speech distill as the dew,
As the droplets on the fresh grass
And as the showers on the herb.
“For I proclaim the name of the Lord;
Ascribe greatness to our God!
“The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.
My speech distill as the dew,
As the droplets on the fresh grass
And as the showers on the herb.
“For I proclaim the name of the Lord;
Ascribe greatness to our God!
“The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.

Manna - What Is It?
Coriander Seeds |
What do we know about manna?
Possibly from childhood stories, we recall it was a rather mysterious
food that fell from heaven providing sustenance for the Israelites during their
days wandering in the wilderness. Just
that brief synopsis gives us much to think about. Let’s do some comparisons:

Brain Teaser - Psalm 57:3
A Consuming Fire. Can That be Good?
Our Sun/Son |
Hebrews 12:29 - For our God is a consuming fire.
Now there's a rather intimidating verse at first glance. Not a picture of a warm & cozy hearth fire is evoked, generally speaking. Let's use the 'law of first occurence' to dig and see if there is something tasty in this.

Walking - A Neat Bible Picture...
Dear Jesus - Please help me see with Your eyes today that I may learn about the walk You have for me...
Studies like this are just great for sharing. Because I'm certain Jesus has something for you that is different than what He had for me.

Be Still...
A friend celebrated his birthday recently by visiting Catalina. Beautiful place. He came back with this picture. I could stare at it for hours… It prompted me to pack up the family and head to the ocean for a couple of days. Powerful picture. Powerful ocean. Staring at it calms me. Puts me into perspective.

My Job Description=Sinner; His Job Description=Savior
Dear Jesus - We present before You Your promise that if we seek for You, You will be found by us. We plead that the beauty of Your gift to us will be real supernaturally to us in a way that changes us today.
I will never leave you or forsake you. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit. (Hebrews 4:9, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 10:13, 1Peter 3:18 NASB)

1 Word Off - Curiousity Answered
For dinner last night I made red lentil stew. Dal. Soup. Really more of a dal than a stew with plenty of carrots, onions, garlic, turmeric, a touch of olive oil. Good comfort food. And I thought about Jacob and one word I didn't understand. Word search on 'sod' is in order.
