What Does God Wear?

Dear Jesus - I praise You for revealing Yourself to us in Your Word.  Give us hearts to open to the revelation...

Do you ever wonder what God wears?  Do you ever wonder what Adam and Eve wore?  A child does.   A thought as simple as this may seem to be - is provided for in the Bible.  Let's consider:

Psalm 104:2 (KJV)

2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

The NASB uses the word 'cloak' .

Sometimes we zip past phrases or words as we read, so captured are we by the beauty of the phrase or the lilt of the verse.  Ah, but we have time today!

Let's go back to the beginning.  Genesis.  Creation.  God creates man and woman in His express image.  This we know from the verses below.

Genesis 1:26-27 (KJV)

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

In fact, one gets the sense of excitement linked as the creation coupled with the intent - which is to 'have dominion'.  Man and Woman are going to be created and handed a beautiful gem of a gift over which they will have dominion.  A beautiful plan.

As we move down to Genesis chapter 2, we see a curious verse.  It is curious because it is a stand-alone verse and is quite emphatic:

Genesis 2:25 (KJV)

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

  • Man and Woman are both referred to
  • Both were naked
  • Neither were ashamed

This leads us to ask some questions:

  • Are we ashamed when we are naked? We can probably all agree that, generally speaking, humans today are not comfortable in that condition. So clearly something changed between this verse and our day.
  • Was God clothed in a garment of light, yet Man and Woman were naked? They were just naked - but they were ok with this?

The clearest line of reasoning here would seem to be that created in the express image of God, Man and Woman also wore garments of light.  As we think about this - wow!  The places we can go with this in the Bible!

Thank You Jesus, that You seek us out, You long to restore us to both our original image (Your own) as well as our original clothing!
